15% price increase in public transportation in Istanbul

A 15% price increase was made in public transportation in Istanbul. With the new increase, the full electronic ticket, which was ₺3.50, increased to ₺4.025, and the student ticket, which was ₺1.70, increased to ₺1.95.

At the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Transportation Coordination Center (UKOME) meeting, electronic ticket prices used in public transportation were increased by 15%.

The UKOME meeting was held at the Istanbul Congress Center under the chairmanship of IBB President Ekrem Imamoglu.

The Public Transportation Services Directorate (TUHIM) demanded a 24.12% increase in transportation fees due to reasons such as inflation, fuel expenses and the increase in the minimum wage.

IBB President Imamoglu also made a presentation including subsidies to public transportation, income and expense items, and said that the requested price increase was the result of the economic course.

8% OF THE BUDGET

Stating that IMM has a subsidy of ₺2.3 billion for public transportation, Imamoglu said that this figure corresponds to 8% of the budget. Imamoglu also noted that they want to make the price increases in July every year.

Eyup Aksu, President of the Istanbul Taxi Chamber of Tradesmen (ITEO), stated that they last received a price increase in December and stated that they demanded a price increase for all transportation vehicles at the same rate and in the same period.

Serdar Yucel, Representative of the 1st Regional Director of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, emphasized the importance of subsidizing public transportation and stated that a high price hike will direct citizens to individual vehicles and increase traffic. uücel noted that the price increase offers are 15%.

VOTING HAS BEEN DONE

After the speeches, IBB President Imamoglu put the 24.12% and 15% proposals to the vote separately.

While TUHIM’s offer of 24.12% was rejected by the majority of votes, the offer of 15% was accepted unanimously.

LAST YEAR’S PRICE INCREASE

Public transportation fees were previously increased by 35% on February 6, 2020.
