34.8 billion cubic meters of gas was transported to Turkey and Europe in 2 years via TurkStream

A total of 34.8 billion cubic meters of gas was delivered to Turkey and Europe in 2 years through the TurkStream Natural Gas Pipeline, which carries Russian natural gas to Turkey and to Europe via Turkey. During this period, the amount of natural gas delivered to Turkey was 18 billion cubic meters, and the amount of gas transported to Europe was 16.8 billion cubic meters.

18 billion cubic meters of gas flowed to Turkey and 16.8 billion cubic meters to Europe between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021, through the TurkStream Natural Gas Pipeline, which was inaugurated by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin on January 8, 2020.

The first line of TurkStream, which has a total gas carrying capacity of 31.50 billion cubic meters, of which 15.75 billion cubic meters in each of its two lines, provides gas flow to Turkey. Gas is transferred to Europe via the second line by TurkStream Gas Transport Inc., which was established with equal partnership of Pipelines and Petrol Transport Inc. (BOTAS) and Gazprom.

WHAT HAPPENED AT TURKSTREAM?

TurkStream was first announced during the official visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Turkey in December 2014.

The intergovernmental agreement for the project, which is designed to operate for at least 50 years, was signed by Berat Albayrak, the then Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, and Aleksandr Novak, the Russian Minister of Energy, on 10 October 2016.

The TurkStream Project, which consists of two sea lines with a length of 930 kilometers and two separate land lines with a length of 142 and 70 kilometers, extending from the Russian city of Anapa to Kiyikoy, was ready for gas flow as of December 31, 2019. The official opening of the line was made on January 8, 2020.

The first 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas was shipped via the TurkStream pipeline on January 27, 2020. 54% of this gas was sent to Turkey, and 46% to the Bulgaria-Turkey border.

Gazprom’s subsidiary Gazprom Export, in a written statement on January 6, 2022, stated that Gazprom Export and BOTAS signed a 4-year natural gas purchase contract to be transported over the TurkStream pipeline.

Within the scope of the contract, up to 5.75 billion cubic meters of gas will be shipped annually over the TurkStream natural gas pipeline for 4 years.
