35% of Turkey’s hazelnut exports come from Trabzon

Trabzon-based companies sold 98 thousand 727 tons of hazelnuts in the export season covering the period of September 1, 2020-August 31, 2021, generating $698 million 134 thousand 231 income.

Eastern Black Sea Exporters Union Hazelnut and Products Sector Committee Chairman Mehmet Cirav said in a written statement that Trabzon ranks first among the cities that export the most hazelnuts, followed by Istanbul, Giresun and Ordu.

Cirav stated that $2 billion 5 million 316 thousand were obtained in return for the export of 292 thousand 83 tons of hazelnuts from Turkey in the 2020-2021 season, “In addition to European countries, which are our traditional hazelnut export markets, the increase in our exports to Far East countries, especially the People’s Republic of China, is an important development in recent years. We care about the market of the People’s Republic of China, which hosts the largest consumption population in the world. We are hopeful that exports to this country will reach higher figures in the coming years.”

Cirav stated that 98 thousand 727 tons of hazelnuts were exported from Trabzon in the 2020-2021 export season, which ended as of yesterday, and noted that $698 million 134 thousand 231 were obtained in return.

Cirav pointed out that 35% of Turkey’s hazelnut exports are carried out from Trabzon alone, and stated that the top exporting countries are Italy, Germany, France, Poland and the People’s Republic of China, respectively.

Cirav also evaluated the 2021-2022 season, which started as of today, and said:

“This season, depending on the positive developments in yield and quality, the new export season will be productive. We are grateful to our President, who has given a price in line with the expectations of the producers and exporters and in line with the realities of the country. Prices in the market are formed entirely within the framework of supply and demand. Intense sales demands will naturally lead to a downward trend in prices. The manufacturer has an important role to play in improving this situation. Instead of all of the hazelnuts being brought to the market in these months, they should be offered for sale in parts. This will stabilize the prices. The producer has to follow the market movements very well.”
