Allianz Considers $6.77 Billion Takeover of UK Roadside Assistance Giant AA

August 29, 2026

German insurance giant Allianz is reportedly considering a £5 billion ($6.77 billion) takeover of UK-based roadside recovery company AA, according to a report by Sky News. Allianz is among a small number of potential buyers in talks with advisers to AA, while private equity firm EQT is also reportedly interested.

Sale and IPO options under consideration

AA’s private equity owners have been pursuing a dual-track process, considering both a direct sale of the company and a potential listing on the London Stock Exchange.

Neither Allianz nor AA has commented on the reported negotiations. Reuters also noted that it could not immediately independently verify the Sky News report.

The Financial Times previously reported that AA was seeking a valuation of around £5 billion and had begun looking for potential buyers.

AA has a long history in the UK

Founded in 1905 by a group of motoring enthusiasts, AA is one of Britain’s best-known roadside assistance companies, recognized for its distinctive yellow recovery vehicles.

The company was previously taken public by its private equity owners in 2014, when its shares were listed at 250 pence each.

AA provides roadside breakdown recovery services to motorists across the UK and has built a large customer base and nationwide service network.

EQT also among potential bidders

Allianz is reportedly one of only a handful of parties currently discussing a possible transaction with AA’s advisers. EQT, the Swedish private equity firm, is also understood to be among the interested parties.

For AA’s owners, maintaining the option of an IPO alongside a potential sale could allow them to compare competing valuations and determine the most attractive route for exiting their investment.

No binding offer yet

At this stage, there is no confirmed binding takeover offer from Allianz. The reported £5 billion figure represents a potential transaction value rather than an agreed purchase price.

The next major development will be whether Allianz or another interested party submits a formal offer, or whether AA’s owners move forward with plans for a London listing.
