Apple is testing memory chips from Chinese semiconductor manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) for potential use in iPhones and MacBooks, as a global shortage of memory components pushes prices higher and puts pressure on technology companies’ supply chains.
CXMT Chips Could Be Used in China-Market Devices
According to reports, Apple has held preliminary discussions with CXMT and is evaluating its DRAM chips across several product lines. The company is particularly considering the use of CXMT components in devices intended for the Chinese market.
Apple’s move comes as demand for memory chips has surged due to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure and data centers, tightening global supplies and driving up component prices.
CXMT Gains Ground in Global Memory Market
CXMT has rapidly expanded its presence in the DRAM market, although its technology remains behind leading manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron. The company reportedly accounted for around 7% of global DRAM revenue in the second quarter of 2026.
Other technology companies, including HP and Acer, have already begun using CXMT memory chips in products sold outside the United States as they seek to cope with the global supply shortage.
U.S. Government Raises Concerns
Apple’s potential use of CXMT memory has also created a geopolitical challenge. The U.S. government has expressed opposition to Apple sourcing memory chips from Chinese manufacturers.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has urged Apple to avoid purchasing memory chips from Chinese suppliers, arguing that American companies should seek alternative sources and reduce their dependence on China for critical technologies.
CXMT is subject to U.S. restrictions and scrutiny over alleged links to China’s military sector, adding another layer of complexity to Apple’s potential agreement with the company. Apple may need U.S. government approval depending on how the chips are sourced and used.
Apple Faces Rising Memory Costs
The shortage is becoming a growing challenge for Apple as memory requirements increase across smartphones and computers. The company is therefore seeking additional suppliers to secure sufficient components and control costs.
Apple’s evaluation of CXMT represents a potential diversification of its memory supply chain, but the company must balance supply needs against U.S.-China technology tensions and regulatory restrictions.
The decision could also have wider implications for global memory manufacturers such as Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix as Chinese suppliers expand their presence in the market.
