The Ministry of Treasury and Finance has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
Under this agreement, AIIB will provide approximately $5 billion in financing for public projects in Türkiye over the next three years.
In a written statement, the Ministry emphasized the significance of this step in strengthening cooperation with AIIB, stating:
“The approximately $5 billion in financing that AIIB plans to provide for public projects in our country over the next three years (2025-2027) has been formalized through the Memorandum of Understanding signed today in AlUla during the meeting between our Minister of Treasury and Finance, Mr. Mehmet Simsek, and AIIB President, Mr. Jin Liqun. With this memorandum, a multi-year framework has been established for the first time, further strengthening our cooperation with AIIB.”
Focus on Sustainable and Green Development
The signed Memorandum of Understanding reinforces the strong partnership between Türkiye and AIIB, making significant contributions to sustainable and green development projects. The financing will support various development-focused projects in key sectors such as energy, transportation, real economy, export financing, healthcare, and water management.
In addition to public sector financing, an additional $5 billion in funding is expected to be made available for private sector projects in the future.
This initiative will diversify funding sources for Türkiye’s real sector and exporters, while also ensuring access to favorable financing conditions for infrastructure and superstructure projects across various sectors and regions.
Thanks to the Ministry of Treasury and Finance’s strong collaboration with multilateral development banks and its effective project financing management, Türkiye has become a preferred development partner. The total active portfolio size of these institutions reached $35 billion by the end of 2024, demonstrating strong confidence in Türkiye’s economic program.
Türkiye Among AIIB’s Top Shareholders
AIIB, headquartered in Beijing, is an international financial institution with 110 member countries. The bank’s total capital is distributed as 75% to regional members and 25% to non-regional members.
Türkiye holds a $2.6 billion share in AIIB, giving it 2.5% voting power and making it the 10th largest shareholder. Among regional countries, Türkiye ranks 7th.
Since 2018, AIIB has provided Türkiye with $5.5 billion in financing, making it the second-largest recipient of AIIB funds after India.
