Borsa Istanbul Extends Uptick Rule for Short Selling on BIST 50 Index

Borsa Istanbul has decided to continue enforcing the uptick rule for short selling transactions on BIST 50 Index stocks, a measure that has been in effect since the beginning of last week.

In a statement from Borsa Istanbul, it was reminded that short selling transactions are permitted for stocks listed in the BIST 50 Index as per the Capital Markets Board’s decision dated December 5, 2024, numbered 62/1863.

The statement continued:
“For the trading session on March 7, 2025, the uptick rule will remain in effect for short selling transactions on these stocks.”

According to the rule:

Short selling orders must be placed at a price higher than the last executed transaction price of the security.
However, if the last executed price is higher than the previous trade price, short selling can also be executed at the last traded price.
Additionally, intraday short sales that are closed with purchases within the same trading day also fall under the scope of short selling transactions. Investors and brokerage firms are required to ensure that orders for such sales are properly marked as short selling to comply with regulations.
