Brazilian Army Chooses Turkish Canik Over US Giants for 200 Heavy Machine Guns

The Brazilian Army, one of the world’s largest military forces, has opted for Turkey’s Canik, owned by Samsun Yurt Savunma (SYS), over major US and European competitors to supply 200 heavy machine guns. This marks a significant step for the Turkish defense industry in Latin America.

Details of the Deal

Brazil, the world’s 10th largest army and the largest in Latin America, has chosen Canik to provide approximately 200 M2HB Quick Change Barrel (QCB) 12.7×99 mm NATO-standard heavy machine guns. The contract is valued at approximately 100 million Turkish lira.

The procurement process was conducted through a competitive tender, in which Canik outperformed three major contenders:

  • Ohio Ordnance (USA)
  • Aquile International (USA)
  • FN Herstal (Europe’s leading light arms manufacturer)

This victory cements Canik’s position as a global player in the defense industry.

Previous Engagements in Brazil

This isn’t Canik’s first success in Brazil. In 2023, the company supplied 3,200 9×19 mm pistols to Brazil’s Special Operations Police, following a tender by the State Secretariat of Public Security and Penitentiary Administration (SESP).

Inspection and Deployment

A delegation from the Brazilian Army Logistics Command will visit Canik’s manufacturing facility in Samsun, Turkey, in March. The heavy machine guns will also be deployed on Guarani armored military vehicles used by the Brazilian Army.

Canik’s Global Success

Owned by Samsun Yurt Savunma (SYS), Canik achieved $136 million in exports in 2023, rising to $172 million in 2024. This deal with Brazil further solidifies its international footprint.

Brazil’s Military Power

With a $31.5 billion defense budget and 371,000 active military personnel, Brazil boasts the 10th largest army in the world and the largest in Latin America. By choosing Canik, the country demonstrates trust in the quality and competitiveness of Turkish defense products.

This contract highlights the growing global influence of Turkey’s defense sector and Canik’s ability to compete against leading international manufacturers.
