Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has climbed to 91st place on the 2025 Fortune Global 500 list, securing a spot among the world’s top 100 companies for the first time.
According to the company’s statement, BYD sold 4.27 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) in 2024, marking a 41% year-over-year increase, and maintained its global leadership in the NEV segment for the third consecutive year.
BYD has been listed on the Fortune Global 500 since 2022. Last year, it ranked 143rd. The company’s significant rise in this year’s rankings is attributed to its sustainable growth strategy and continued investment in technology.
Guided by a philosophy of being “technology-driven and innovation-led,” BYD’s growth is underpinned by its deep commitment to research and development. In 2024, the company increased its R&D spending by 36%, reaching approximately $7.47 billion.
BYD has a long-standing strategy of prioritizing R&D; between 2011 and 2024, the company spent more on R&D than its net profit in 13 out of 14 years. This strong investment pipeline has enabled BYD to develop a range of cutting-edge technologies, including:
- Blade Battery: known for its high safety and long lifespan,
- DiSus Intelligent Body Control System: enhancing ride comfort and safety,
- Megawatt Fast Charging: offering ultra-fast charging comparable to refueling times of traditional vehicles,
- and the e-Platform 3.0, an integrated smart vehicle platform.
BYD’s entry into the top 100 of the Fortune Global 500 highlights the success of its global strategy and forward-looking tech vision. The company currently operates in 112 countries and regions, delivering its NEVs and environmentally friendly technologies to consumers worldwide.
As part of its environmental commitment, BYD aims to combat climate change through its “Cool the Earth by 1°C” initiative, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and building a more sustainable, livable future.
