Card Payments in Türkiye Surge 44% Year-on-Year in April, Nearing TRY 2.6 Trillion

According to data released by the Interbank Card Center (BKM), the total amount of card payments made in Türkiye increased sharply in April, rising 44% compared to the same period last year and approaching TRY 2.6 trillion.

The figures showed that credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards continued to play a growing role in consumer spending and commercial transactions across the country. The total payment volume reached nearly TRY 2.6 trillion during the month, reflecting strong domestic demand and the ongoing expansion of digital payment systems.

BKM data also indicated a significant increase in the number of card transactions. Consumers increasingly preferred cashless payment methods for both retail purchases and online shopping, while contactless payments maintained their upward trend.

The number of cards in circulation also continued to rise. Compared with the previous year, Türkiye recorded notable growth in credit card, debit card, and prepaid card ownership, highlighting the broader adoption of electronic payment technologies throughout the economy.

Industry analysts note that inflationary pressures, higher consumer spending, and the rapid growth of e-commerce have been among the key drivers behind the surge in card payment volumes. Digital banking services and widespread mobile payment adoption have also contributed to the expansion of the sector.

The latest figures underline the continuing transformation of Türkiye’s financial ecosystem toward faster and more digitalized payment infrastructure.
