CBRT Reserves Hit Record High of $156.4 Billion on September 26, 2024

Total reserves at the Central Bank of Turkiye increased by $2.8 billion last week, reaching an all-time high of $156.4 billion.

The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkiye (CBRT) has reached a historic milestone, as its total reserves soared to a record high of $156.4 billion in the week ending on September 20, 2024. This marked an increase of $2.84 billion from the previous week, driven by strong growth in both foreign exchange and gold reserves.

Record-Breaking Reserve Levels

According to the CBRT’s weekly report on monetary and banking statistics:

  • The bank’s gross foreign exchange reserves rose by $1.95 billion, climbing to $94.1 billion from the previous week’s $92.2 billion.
  • During the same period, the gold reserves saw an increase of $888 million, reaching $62.3 billion from $61.4 billion.

This upward trend in reserves reflects the Central Bank’s efforts to strengthen its financial position and maintain stability in the face of global economic challenges. As of September 20, the CBRT’s total reserves have increased from $153.6 billion to $156.4 billion, setting an all-time record.

Growth in Foreign Exchange Reserves

The significant rise in foreign exchange (FX) reserves is a key factor contributing to this reserve expansion. The $1.95 billion jump in FX reserves highlights the Central Bank’s active strategy in boosting its holdings:

  • Gross FX reserves reached $94.1 billion, compared to $92.2 billion the week before.
  • This marks an important moment for the bank’s foreign exchange holdings, supporting its broader monetary policy objectives.

Surge in Gold Reserves

In addition to FX reserves, the gold reserves of the CBRT also witnessed a solid increase:

  • Gold reserves grew by $888 million, pushing total gold holdings to $62.3 billion.
  • The consistent rise in gold reserves underscores the bank’s focus on diversifying its assets to ensure long-term financial security.

Why This Matters

These record levels of reserves are crucial for Turkiye’s economy, providing a buffer against external shocks and enhancing the country’s financial resilience. With increasing reserves, the CBRT is well-positioned to stabilize the currency, manage inflation, and navigate complex global market conditions.
