ASELSAN Takes the Lead in Technology Transfer Initiatives

In the crossroads of various technology transfer endeavors in Turkiye, ASELSAN, one of the country’s leading defense and technology firms, plays a central role. The ASELSAN Technology Transfer Directorate is actively engaged in technology and knowledge exchange efforts between the company and external stakeholders.

The responsibilities of the ASELSAN Technology Transfer Directorate include providing insights to ASELSAN sector presidencies on royalty rates (usage rights) and commercialization models in technology transfer activities. The Directorate also facilitates coordination between involved parties.

Among the notable technology transfers to external stakeholders is the “Remote Controlled Weapon Systems” (RCWS), a high-production system that has seen significant technology transfer to ASELSAN Konya Weapons Systems Inc.

ASELSAN Konya, established to strategically contribute to the country in the design and production of weapons not domestically producible, received technology transfer related to RCWS. The aim is to transfer ASELSAN’s accumulated knowledge in 30/35-millimeter weapons to ASELSAN Konya, where it will be transformed into a product. The ongoing efforts include the setup and qualification of production lines for RCWS production as outlined in the Technology Transfer Agreement signed.

ASELSAN’s Contribution to Traffic Radar Technology

In another technology transfer initiative, ASELSAN’s Radar and Electronic Warfare Systems Sector Presidency (REHİS) will transfer its expertise in radar technologies to the Micro Electronic Systems (MELSİS) company for commercialization in civil applications. This collaboration involves licensing REHİS’s radar technologies to MELSİS for the development and commercialization of traffic radar systems for roadways, with royalties paid to ASELSAN. The agreement has already been formalized through a technology transfer contract.

Upon the completion of necessary developments and modifications for the traffic radar product, MELSİS will generate royalty income from the sales.

Gaining New Capabilities Through External Partnerships

ASELSAN not only engages in outbound technology transfers but also acquires new capabilities through collaborations with external partners. As part of the Terahertz Real-Time Passenger Imaging Product Family Project, technology transfer activities were conducted with TÜBİTAK MAM.

The Terahertz Real-Time Passenger Imaging System is designed to detect concealed explosive devices, firearms such as pistols, rifles, knives, and substances like drugs, tobacco, cigarettes, meat, alcohol, and similar materials emitting natural THz radiation from the human body.

TÜBİTAK MAM will develop and transfer the integrated receiver array to ASELSAN, which will be integrated into the relevant ASELSAN system.

Technology Transfer for the Wind Turbine Market

ASELSAN’s Transportation, Security, Energy, Automation, and Health Systems Sector Presidency, in collaboration with the Technology Transfer Directorate, conducted technology transfer activities with the German-based company Aerovide in the wind turbine sector. This included the transfer of patents, designs, know-how, and technological expertise.

Meetings were organized with representatives of Aerovide to evaluate technical, financial, and other aspects, resulting in a signed agreement. ASELSAN, following its own advancements and integrations, will offer proposals to customers.

It is anticipated that the Turkish market for wind energy will exceed 40 billion dollars in the coming years, with ASELSAN positioned as a significant player in this market.
