Chairman of London Energy Club: Energy transformation in Turkey took place at the speed of revolution

The 9th of the ‘Sustainable Stories Webinar Series’, organized within the scope of the Global Hope Festival, which was initiated with the mission of raising awareness on sustainability under the leadership of TURKUVAZ Media Group and the economy magazine InBusiness, was held yesterday with the title ‘Clean Energy’. The opening speech of the webinar, sponsored by Borsa Istanbul, Halkbank, Koza Gold Enterprises and Turk Telekom, was made by Hulya Guler, Editor-in-Chief of Inbusiness Magazine.

ACTORS HAVE CHANGED

Speaking in the special session of the webinar, Global Resources Partnership Chairman of the Board & Founding Chairman of London Energy Club Mehmet Ogutcu pointed out that the actors and rules of the game in energy have changed, and stated that the transformation in energy has taken place at a revolutionary pace. Reminding that 57% of Turkey’s installed capacity is renewable energy, Ogutcu pointed out that 37% of its actual production comes from renewable energy. Ogutcu said, “Turkey completed its renewable energy revolution before many European and OECD countries.” International Renewable Energy Agency Regionals Unit Head Binu Parthan stated that the agency operates in 180 countries including Turkey and expressed that they believe that the transformation to renewable energy will be very fast. Noting that the renewable energy production capacity has reached a record level with the pandemic, Parthan noted that the decrease in the costs of renewable energy will continue. European Council Member, European Climate Change Foundation Member Julian Popov pointed out that there is an energy price crisis in Europe and noted that an integrated structure should be created and plans should be made correctly in order to avoid these problems. Popov, stating that Turkey will play an important role here, said, “Turkey has come a long way in energy integration with the EU.”

$11 BILLION WILL BE INVESTED

Kadir Has University Energy and Sustainable Development Application and Research Center (CESD) Director Prof. Dr. Volkan S. Ediger, speaking at the ‘How Transformation Will Be’ panel to be held by Ms. Prof. Dr. Aynur Eray, Director of Hacettepe University New and Clean Energy Application and Research Center, underlined that Turkey is very lucky in terms of renewable energy resources and that it needs to get rid of foreign-dependent technology in order to use these resources efficiently. Dr. Abdullah Bugrahan Karaveli, Head of the Department of Energy Efficiency and Environment at the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, said, “We need to increase energy efficiency to higher levels in order to reduce Turkey’s dependence on foreign sources. As a ministry, we have a very serious work to do. It is planned to invest $11 billion in the sector by the end of 2023.” ITU Energy Institute Director Prof. Dr. Ilhan Kocaarslan reminded that the global warming process started with the industrial revolution. Bulent Sen, Chairman of the Architects and Engineers Group, underlined that until 2030, an investment of $4 trillion is required for clean energy investments in the world.
