1400 buildings in Turkiye switched to “NZEB” concept

Within the scope of the regulation, which imposes a renewable energy requirement in buildings larger than 5 thousand square meters, 1400 buildings have switched to the concept of “Nearly Zero Energy Buildings”.

With the change in the regulation made by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the transition to the NZEB concept, which is more energy efficient than normal buildings and provides a certain part of the energy it uses from renewable energy sources, became mandatory on 1 January.

Thus, from January 1, all buildings with a total construction area of more than 5 thousand square meters in a parcel will be constructed with an energy performance class of at least “B” and these buildings will meet at least 5% of the energy they use from renewable energy sources such as solar panels, wind energy, and heat pumps.

In this context, 1400 buildings larger than 5 thousand square meters have been designed and licensed in accordance with NZEB conditions.

These buildings are designed to be approximately 25% energy efficient compared to a normal building. By designing these buildings, which are still under construction, under NZEB conditions, the energy wastage of 24 gigawatt hours per year will be prevented when the building is completed.

Thus, an annual saving of ₺9.5 million will be achieved in Turkiye’s energy bill.

The application will be expanded to buildings over 2 thousand square meters in 2025.

In addition, as of January 1, 2025, it will be mandatory to extend this application to all buildings over 2 thousand square meters and to provide at least 10% of the energy used from renewable energy sources.

In order to reach Turkiye’s “2053 net zero emissions” target, it is aimed to move to the second stage of implementation starting from 2030, making it mandatory for all buildings without a square meter limit, and making greater improvements in the minimum energy performance class and the rate of minimum renewable energy use.
