Demirköprü Dam Selected as Candidate Site for Turkey’s First Floating Solar Power Plant Under YEKA

Turkey has identified the Demirköprü Dam as the candidate site for its first floating solar power plant within the framework of the Renewable Energy Resource Zone (YEKA) initiative. According to an announcement on the official website of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the selected area includes the reservoir of the Demirköprü Dam and its hydroelectric power plant.

The statement noted that detailed studies have commenced for the site in accordance with the YEKA regulation framework.

“Floating Solar Power Helps Prevent Evaporation and Protect Ecosystems”

Hakan Erkan, Secretary General of the Solar Energy Industrialists and Industry Association (GENSED), emphasized the efficient use of water surfaces enabled by floating solar panels.

“These systems allow for increased energy savings by improving the feasibility of hydroelectric plants that operate below capacity due to low water levels,” Erkan stated. “They also enhance the efficient use of transmission lines, reduce surface water evaporation, and help maintain stable water temperatures, thereby contributing to ecosystem protection.”

He concluded that floating solar systems are of great importance for sustainable energy production and the preservation of natural resources.
