Diyarbakır, Turkey – July 11, 2025 — Diyarbakır is playing an increasingly vital role in enhancing Turkey’s energy supply security, according to Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar. In a video statement shared on the social media platform X, Bayraktar highlighted that 58% of the 41 million barrels of newly discovered oil reserves in Turkey this year are located in fields across Diyarbakır.
Currently, approximately 16,400 barrels of oil are being produced daily from 307 active wells in the region. Since the initial discovery, around 330 million barrels of oil have been added to Turkey’s energy portfolio. The government now aims to raise daily production in Diyarbakır to 20,000 barrels by the end of the year by converting this significant potential into output.
Bayraktar emphasized that Diyarbakır is not only increasing production volume but also entering a new phase of technological transformation in oil extraction. Ongoing efforts in four major sites aim to extract hydrocarbons trapped deep within rock formations using innovative production models, which are expected to contribute significantly to the national economy.
Advanced seismic analysis projects—carried out in collaboration with international partners—are continuing at full speed. The first drilling operation under this program is scheduled to take place within the year.
In his social media post, Minister Bayraktar stated:
“The ancient city of Diyarbakır, home to thousands of years of civilizations, now hosts strategic production fields that strengthen Turkey’s energy supply security. In a region once condemned to darkness, the sun of production is rising once again.”
