Domestic investors number hits record high in borsa Istanbul BIST

Number of domestic investors rises by 121,814 on monthly basis in October

The number of domestic investors trading in Turkey’s stock market Borsa Istanbul (BIST) and their portfolio values made new records last month.

The number of domestic real investors rose by 121,814 on a monthly basis to reach 1.8 million, hitting an all-time high, according to data compiled by Anadolu Agency from the Central Registry Agency (MKK) data.

Since the beginning of the year,the number of domestic investors in BIST has gone up by 677,506, corresponding to a 57% increase.

With the rise in October, the number of domestic investors in Borsa Istanbul increased for the 15th month in a row. This is the longest running rise in Borsa Istanbul’s history.

During the same period, an average of 47,700 investors got into Borsa Istanbul for the first time on a monthly basis.

The average increase in the number of domestic investors was at the level of 10,600 in the previous record period, when a 14-month increase was experienced.

Portfolio value of the domestic investor increased by around 940 million Turkish liras ($118.8 million) in October to reach 168.8 billion Turkish liras ($21.3 million), setting a new record over the past seven months.

The data, however, showed the number of foreign institutional investors investing in Borsa Istanbul, has declined recently, decreasing by 11% to 1,261 in October.

Portfolio value of foreign institutional investors increased by approximately 6.4 billion Turkish liras ($809,000) to reach 195.1 billion Turkish liras ($24.6 million).

On the other hand, the number of foreign real investors has been increasing over the last 11 months. During the period, an average of 205 people per month preferred Borsa Istanbul for investments.
