New record in automobile sales in April in Turkiye

In the automobile and light commercial vehicle market, 97 thousand 679 vehicles were sold in April, which was recorded as the highest April month of all time.

According to the April data of the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), total sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Turkiye increased by 57.3% in the January-April period of 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year, and amounted to 333 thousand 650 units. In the January-April period of 2023, automobile sales reached 252 thousand 819 with an increase of 55.7% compared to the previous year, and light commercial vehicle sales became 80 thousand 831 with an increase of 62.7%.

Looking at the month of April this year, the sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles increased by 62.7% compared to April 2022 and were recorded at the level of 97 thousand 679. This was recorded as the highest April month of all time. Thus, the record trend in automotive sales continued in April after March.

In April, automobile sales increased by 69.9% compared to the same month of the previous year and reached 77 thousand 398, while light commercial vehicle sales increased by 40.1% to 20 thousand 281.

The automobile and light commercial vehicle market grew by 55.2% compared to the 10-year average sales in April. Automobile sales increased by 58.3 %compared to the average 10-year April sales, and light commercial vehicle sales increased by 44.3% compared to the 10-year April average sales.

Sales by segment and body types

When the automobile market is evaluated by segments in the January-April 2023 period, 88.9% of the market was composed of vehicles in the A, B and C segments with low tax rates.

C segment cars received a 53.9% share with 136 thousand 173 units, and B segment cars a 34.4% share with 86 thousand 875 units.

The lion’s share of cars under 1600cc

When the automobile market is evaluated according to body types, the most preferred body type was SUV cars with a share of 45.5%. SUV cars were followed by sedans with a share of 29.6% and hatchback cars with a share of 22.5%.

According to the engine volume of the automobile market, sales of cars under 1600cc increased by 51.4% to 85.1%, while sales of cars in the 1600-2000cc range increased by 52.5% to 0.8%, and sales of cars over 2000cc increased by 102.6% and received a share of 0.2%.

7 out of 10 vehicles are automatic

In the said period, automatic transmission cars had a share of 74.4% from sales with 187,994 units, while the share of manual transmission cars was 25.6% with 64,825 units.

According to body type in the light commercial vehicle market, van body type was the most preferred body type with 81.1%, minibus body type took the second place with a share of 7.7% and pickup truck body type took the third place with a share of 7%.
