YouTube Experiments with Color-Based Video Sorting

YouTube is testing a new feature that sorts videos based on the color of the thumbnail image. The feature, currently under trial with YouTube Premium users, might aid in video discovery by appealing to aesthetic preferences.

YouTube, the world’s largest video sharing platform, is currently experimenting with a novel feature that would allow users to sort videos based on the predominant color of the thumbnail image. This proposed feature would enable users to create a video feed based on a selected color, with options including primary hues such as red, green, and blue. The color-centric feed would then be displayed prominently at the top of the user’s screen.

A Unique Sorting Method

This innovative sorting approach has raised a few eyebrows. Tech experts at 9 to 5 Google have questioned the practicality of such a feature, arguing that the color of a thumbnail may not necessarily correlate with the content of a video. In their view, this makes the color-based sorting method an odd choice, though it does add a dash of color and creativity to the user interface.

Interestingly, these experts have suggested that this color-based feature might feel more at home in YouTube Music rather than the main YouTube platform. This is due to the fact that album covers and song thumbnails often use color to set a mood or tone, which could align with the musical content.

Previously Spotted Concept

It’s worth noting that the concept of sorting videos by color is not entirely new. Last year, eagle-eyed Reddit users spotted a similar feature, albeit in a different format. However, the current iteration of the color feed option seems to be more refined and integrated into the platform’s functionality.

At present, this color feed option is being tested with a select group of YouTube Premium users as part of YouTube’s ongoing user experience enhancement initiatives. It remains to be seen whether this feature will make it to the wider YouTube audience.
