In January 2026, Dubai International Airport led with 5.5 million seats against Atlanta’s 4.9 million
Dubai International Airport (DXB) has unseated Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International (ATL) to claim the title of the world’s busiest airport by seat capacity this January.
This ranking accounts for total scheduled seat capacity across both domestic and international flights. According to OAG data, Dubai led the market in January 2026 with 5.5 million seats, outpacing Atlanta’s total of approximately 4.9 million.
Tokyo Haneda (HND) secured the third-place position in the global rankings.
This transition represents a significant reorganization of global aviation rankings. Atlanta had long dominated the top spot, sustained by the sheer volume of its domestic U.S. network, but that multi-year streak has now been broken.
These latest OAG figures reflect Dubai International’s ongoing surge in passenger volume. After finishing 2025 with record-breaking numbers, the airport has successfully maintained that growth into the start of 2026.
Data from Dubai Airports reveals that December 2025 was the busiest month in DXB’s history. The hub serviced approximately 8.8 million passengers, a notable increase from the 8.3 million recorded during the same period in 2024.
Passenger numbers climbed even higher in early January. On January 3, the airport set a new single-day record by processing 324,000 travelers, with the following day nearly matching that peak at 322,000 passengers.
The airport’s performance in December and early January suggests that this growth has continued into 2026.
OAG’s busiest airports ranking measure airline capacity (seats offered) instead of passenger traffic (actual fliers). This metric serves as a forward-looking indicator, showing how many seats airlines have scheduled for the market regardless of the final passenger count.
