Electric Car Sales Increased by 223.1% in the First Half of the Year, Narrowing the Gap with Diesel Cars in Market Share
In Turkiye’s automotive sector, the popularity of electric vehicles is rapidly rising, leading to a narrowing gap in market share between electric and diesel cars. According to data from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), sales of “fully electric” cars surged by 223.1% in the first six months compared to the same period last year, reaching 35,636 units.
Total sales of cars and light commercial vehicles increased by 3.7% to 577,981 units during this period. While petrol cars maintained their lead in sales, hybrid cars showed significant growth. Diesel car sales continued to decline due to reduced production by global manufacturers.
The market share gap between electric and diesel cars has significantly decreased compared to the same period last year. The market share of “fully electric” cars, in particular, gained substantial momentum, accounting for 7.7% of total sales.
In June alone, sales of “fully electric” cars reached 8,032 units, accounting for 9.14% of the market.
With the increasing preference for electric vehicles, Turkiye’s automotive sector is rapidly transforming towards sustainable and innovative mobility solutions.
