Erdogan Highlights Mutual Understanding with Trump on Syria, Foresees New Momentum in Türkiye–US Ties

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded to journalists’ questions on his return from Italy, addressing the future of Türkiye–US relations and his communication with former US President Donald Trump.

Erdogan stated that preparations by relevant ministries are ongoing for a face-to-face meeting with Trump, saying:

“I believe that in this new period, we will bring a very different momentum to our bilateral relations with my friend Trump. We also see that, as two leaders, we understand each other regarding the issue of Syria.”

Speaking to reporters aboard the presidential plane on Tuesday following his visit to Italy, Erdogan described his recent phone call with Trump as sincere and productive.

Erdogan also expressed support for Trump’s vision of peace, particularly concerning Russia and Ukraine:

“We support his peace vision, especially on Russia and Ukraine. We welcome his approach that takes into account Türkiye’s sensitivities.”

Emphasizing the importance of maintaining dialogue even on matters of disagreement, Erdogan added:

“We are two leaders who believe that we can overcome issues—considered risky by some circles—through dialogue and diplomacy.”
