Euro area unemployment falls to 6.7% in January

Number of jobless people drops 214,000 from month ago, according to Eurostat

The euro area unemployment rate decreased to 6.7% in January, versus 7.0% a month ago, the EU statistical office announced on Thursday.

The number of unemployed people dropped by 214,000 from December 2021 and by 2.1 million from January 2021, the Eurostat said in a statement.

The unemployment rate was 8.3% in the same month of the last year.

More than 2 million people under the age of 25 years were jobless in the euro area,bringing the youth unemployment rate in January to 13.9%.

The unemployment rate for women decreased from 7.2% in December 2021 to 7.1% in January 2022, while the unemployment rate for men dropped from 6.7% to 6.6%.

In the EU, the unemployment rate dropped to 6.2% in January, down from 6.3% a month ago and from 7.5% a year ago.

Some 13.3 million people were jobless in the bloc as of January, down by 216,000 month-on-month.
