
Brussels – The unemployment rate in the euro area fell to a record low in January, as the region continued to demonstrate resilience despite ongoing global uncertainties.
According to data released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, the unemployment rate in the euro area declined to 6.1% in January from 6.2% in December. Market expectations had been for the rate to remain at 6.2%.
Youth unemployment across the European Union decreased by 27,000 people in January 2026 compared with the previous month, bringing the total number of unemployed young people to 2.922 million. Of these, 2.352 million were in the euro area.
The youth unemployment rate in the EU edged down to 15.1% in January 2026 from 15.2% in December 2025. In the euro area, the rate fell more notably, declining from 15.0% to 14.8%.
The latest figures indicate continued strength in the labor market across the single-currency bloc, even amid broader economic and geopolitical uncertainties.
