European Investment Bank Eyes Investment in Türkiye’s Railway Network

ANKARA, June 11, 2026 — The European Investment Bank (EIB) is considering future investments in Türkiye’s railway infrastructure as part of a renewed phase of cooperation with the country, according to EIB Vice President Robert de Groot.

Speaking about potential areas of collaboration between the EIB and Türkiye, de Groot said the bank sees railway infrastructure as a promising sector for future financing, citing Türkiye’s ambitious plans to expand and modernize its rail network. He noted that the EIB has extensive experience funding railway projects across the European Union and could contribute similar expertise in Türkiye.

The remarks come as the EIB strengthens its engagement with Türkiye following the signing of financing agreements with Türkiye Development and Investment Bank and Türk Eximbank. Current cooperation is focused on green energy and energy-efficiency projects aimed at reducing energy consumption and increasing the use of renewable resources.

De Groot also highlighted the bank’s ongoing support for earthquake recovery efforts in southern Türkiye. Following a visit to Hatay Province, he praised reconstruction projects designed to restore drinking water services and rebuild infrastructure to higher technical standards capable of withstanding future earthquakes.

According to the EIB official, recent visits to Hatay, Ankara, and Istanbul could mark the beginning of a new chapter in relations between the bank and Türkiye. He expressed hope that a strong pipeline of projects would be developed in the near future, with the EIB’s Istanbul office helping identify investment opportunities eligible for financing.

The potential railway investments would complement Türkiye’s broader efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure. The country has already secured substantial international financing for rail projects, including funding aimed at upgrading and maintaining the national railway network.

If realized, EIB participation in railway development could provide additional long-term financing and technical expertise for projects designed to improve connectivity, enhance logistics efficiency, and support Türkiye’s sustainable transportation goals.
