Eurozone industrial production slips 2% in April

Largest decreases seen in Ireland, Slovakia, Malta, according to EU statistical office

Industrial production declined in the EU and the eurozone by 0.5% and 2%, respectively, on an annual basis in April, Eurostat announced on Wednesday.

In the euro area, production of capital goods decreased by 9% and intermediate goods by 0.3%, while energy production rose by 1.5%, non-durable consumer goods by 4.7%, and durable consumer goods by 5.7%.

In the EU, production of capital goods dropped by 7.5%, while production of intermediate goods increased by 0.5%, energy by 3.6%, durable consumer goods by 4.9%, and non-durable consumer goods by 7.5%, the bloc’s statistical office said in a statement.

The largest annual decreases were posted by Ireland (minus 30.9%), Slovakia (minus 9.6%), and Malta (minus 9.4%), while the highest increases were seen in Lithuania (20.6%), Denmark (17.0%),and Bulgaria (16.9%).

On a monthly basis, industrial production increased in both the EU and the euro area by 0.3% and 0.4%, respectively, in April.

The figure had dropped by 1.4% in the euro area and 1% in the EU on a monthly basis in March.​​​​​​​
