Karapinar Solar Power Plant prevented the use of natural gas worth $400 million

Karapinar Solar Power Plant, which started producing electricity in Konya in March, has prevented the use of approximately $400 million -of natural gas with over 4 billion kilowatt-hours of electrical energy it has produced to date.

Kalyon Karapinar SPP, which is the largest solar power plant in Europe and one of the few in the world, whose installation started in January 2020, is the size of 2,600 football fields, and consists of 3 million 256 thousand 38 solar panels.

The power plant, which was put into production as the panels were installed piece by piece and started producing electricity at full capacity in March this year, can meet the domestic electricity needs of more than 2 million people with its installed power of 1350 megawatts.

The power plant, which can produce 3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, has prevented the use of natural gas worth approximately $400 million since its commissioning.

“We have produced more than 4 billion kilowatt hours of electricity”

Kalyon Enerji Executive Board Member and General Manager Murtaza Ata reminded that they started the construction of Karapinar SPP in 2020.

Stating that the completed sections were commissioned and electricity was produced while the work was continuing, Ata said, “We have produced more than 4 billion kilowatt hours of electricity since the first day. We have prevented the use of natural gas worth approximately $400 million . Likewise, over 3 million tons of carbon emissions were prevented. Therefore, this facility has undertaken a very important mission in terms of its contribution to the economy. It is a very important facility to both serve energy supply security and make foreign dependency in energy more manageable.”

Annual contribution of $600 million to the economy from solar energy

Ata emphasized that Karapinar Solar Power Plant is one of the largest power plants in the world with an installed power of 1350 megawatts and said, “This power plant is the largest power plant in Europe, with a localization rate of over 80%. In total, the factory and solar power plant make a net contribution to the economy of nearly $600 million annually and have an added value.”

Reminding that Kalyon Enerji has 3 important solar power projects in Turkiye, Ata said:

“Hopefully, it will be completed by the end of the year. It is an investment of $350 million, over 400 megawatts. We have 1220 megawatt wind power plant projects that are still being invested in various parts of Turkiye. They will be completed in the next 3-4 years. Their total investment amount is approximately $1 billion 400 million. The total of our current ongoing investments is $1 billion 800 million. Both wind power plants and solar power plants are continuing.”
