The number of foreign pilots in airlines decreased in Turkiye

While the rate of foreign pilots in airline companies serving in Turkiye was 4% in 2021, it decreased to 3.9% by the end of last year.

According to the information compiled from the Activity Report of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM), the aviation sector has grown rapidly with the legal regulations made since 2003. The sector continues its development with increasing infrastructure and fleet investments, number of connections and price regulations on flight tickets.

The number of employees in the sector, which was approximately 65 thousand in 2003, reached 253 thousand 885 in 2021. The sector turnover in 2021 has increased 90 times in Turkish lira since 2003, and 9 times in dollar terms despite the increase in the exchange rate. The turnover in the sector, which was ₺3.06 billion in 2003, increased to ₺272.6 billion in 2021. In dollar terms, while it was $2.2 billion in 2003, it increased to $20.50 billion the previous year.

217 air transport companies are operating

As of the end of 2022, 217 air transport companies are operating in Turkiye. These enterprises have a total of 1690 aircraft, including 598 aircraft, 181 air taxis, 495 general aviation vehicles, 399 balloons and 17 very light aircraft.

Number of pilots increased by 10.4%

14 thousand 55 pilots work in airline companies in the country. The number of pilots increased by 10.4% compared to 2021. Last year, 12 thousand 733 pilots were working in companies.

Although the number of foreign pilots increased, their proportion in the total decreased. This decline was due to the increase in the number of domestic pilots. The rate of foreign pilots among airplane and helicopter pilots, which was 4% with 434 people in 2021, dropped to 3.9% in 2022, although the number increased to 467.

As of the end of last year, the total number of other licensed technical employees, including 2,024 air traffic controllers, 434 dispatchers, 4,715 technicians, 620 air traffic safety electronics personnel and 581 aviation information management personnel, reached 8,374.
