Ford Otosan has introduced a new intermodal train route between Craiova, Romania, and Istanbul Halkalı, Türkiye, in collaboration with Mars Logistics. This initiative aims to reduce logistics costs following the production launch of new models at Ford Otosan’s Craiova factory. The train service will operate four round trips per week, ensuring the efficient transportation of Ford Puma, Electric Puma Gen E, Transit Courier, Tourneo Courier, and their electric versions from Craiova to Türkiye.
12,000 Vehicles to Be Transported Annually
The newly established intermodal route is expected to transport 12,000 vehicles per year to Türkiye. Additionally, it will facilitate the delivery of production parts from Türkiye to the Craiova factory. This eco-friendly logistics solution, developed with Mars Logistics, is set to reduce carbon emissions by 63% compared to road transport by the end of the year.
Cost Efficiency and Sustainability Benefits
Ford Otosan Leader Güven Özyurt highlighted the significance of the project in terms of both sustainability and operational efficiency, stating:
“At our Craiova factory, which has an annual production capacity of 270,000 vehicles, we are now using this new logistics model to transport a portion of the Ford Puma and Courier models to Türkiye. Compared to road and sea transportation, this method reduces costs and enhances competitiveness while also contributing to our sustainability goals with an environmentally friendly logistics approach.
At Ford Otosan, we are not only optimizing our own production processes but also strengthening our entire supply chain ecosystem. We source parts from nearly 10 Turkish suppliers in Romania and collaborate with over 60 suppliers in Türkiye for the vehicles we manufacture there. More importantly, we are also a key player in engineering exports, as our Sancaktepe R&D Center develops models that contribute to knowledge and technology exports.
Our vision at Ford Otosan extends beyond our operations; we are committed to building a more efficient, sustainable, and integrated production and logistics network with all our business partners.”
