According to Galataport Istanbul’s official business network, the number of homeport passengers—those starting and ending their journeys in Istanbul—was 96,000 in 2024. This figure is expected to rise by 134% to 225,000 in 2025, further solidifying Istanbul as a key cruise hub.
Winter Cruise Tourism Begins in Istanbul for the First Time
Closing 2024 with 164 cruise calls and 400,000 passengers, Galataport Istanbul plans to increase its cruise traffic to 225 ships and 585,000 passengers in 2025. The port will also introduce winter cruise tourism for the first time, welcoming MSC Sinfonia every Wednesday until April 2025, extending Istanbul’s seasonal cruise calendar.
Cruise Tourists Contribute Up to Six Times More Than Regular Visitors
A statement on Galataport Istanbul’s business network highlighted the port’s cutting-edge infrastructure, including its patented “Special Hydraulic System Gate” and “Underground Cruise Terminal”, which create a temporary customs area that enhances the passenger experience.
Cruise passengers who choose Istanbul as their homeport contribute significantly to the local economy, spending up to six times more than regular tourists while exploring the city before or after their voyages. The port’s strategic position is further strengthened by Turkish Airlines—serving the most destinations worldwide—and IGA Istanbul Airport, a key regional transportation hub.
