ISTANBUL — Garanti BBVA has issued a €30 million green bond aimed at financing sustainable agriculture projects that strengthen climate change adaptation and resilience, the bank announced on Monday. The issuance was completed as part of an international borrowing transaction with a maturity of one year and two days.
The proceeds from the bond will be allocated under Garanti BBVA’s Sustainable Debt Finance Framework to support projects that promote environmentally sustainable agricultural practices. Eligible investments include organic and sustainable farming, sustainable land management, efficient irrigation infrastructure, water management systems, climate adaptation measures for agricultural activities, and agricultural infrastructure projects.
Garanti BBVA Chief Executive Officer Mahmut Akten said sustainable finance remains one of the bank’s key tools for supporting the transformation of Turkey’s economy, highlighting agriculture as a strategic sector for both food security and climate resilience.
“Supporting adaptation in sustainable agriculture is of critical importance as the effects of climate change become increasingly visible,” Akten said. “Financing investments that enhance the resilience of agricultural production is essential for the country’s future.”
Akten also noted that the bank raised its sustainable finance target for the 2018–2029 period to TRY 3.5 trillion last year. As of the first quarter of 2026, Garanti BBVA had already reached approximately TRY 1.3 trillion toward that goal. He added that the bank intends to continue expanding its sustainable funding sources while supporting the transition to a greener economy, including sustainable agriculture and the conservation of natural resources.
The latest issuance reflects the growing role of green finance in directing capital toward projects that help mitigate climate risks while promoting long-term environmental sustainability in the agricultural sector.
