Global crude steel production down by 2.4% in April

Global crude steel production was 161.4 million tons in April, down 2.4% compared to the same period last year.

World Steel Association (Worldsteel), headquartered in Brussels, announced crude steel production data for April.

Accordingly, global crude steel production fell by 2.4% to 161.4 million tons last month, compared to the same period of 2022.

It was estimated that the production of China, the world’s largest steel producer, decreased by 1.5% to 92.6 million tons in the said period.

Japan’s production decreased by 3.1% to 7.2 million tons, Germany’s production decreased by 3.8% to 3.2 million tons, and the US production decreased by 5.3% to 6.6 million tons.

Turkiye’s crude steel production decreased by 20.6% in April compared to the same period of the previous year, and decreased to 2.7 million tons.

In the said period, it is estimated that steel production increased by 1.9% to 6.4 million tons in Russia, and to 3.1 million tons in Iran with an increase of 5.9%.

Global crude steel production decreased by 0.3% to 622.7 million tons in January-April 2023, compared to the same period last year.

The World Steel Association expects global steel demand to increase by 1.7% in 2024, following the projected 2.3% increase in consumption this year due to the recovery in manufacturing activities.
