Global Wind Energy Increases by 165 Gigawatts Since Last Year

Global wind energy installed capacity has risen to 1,299 gigawatts, following an increase of 165 gigawatts last year.

According to the Global Wind Energy Council’s (GWEC) Global Wind Report 2026, the surge in installations reveals that wind energy continues to be the backbone of the energy transition in major economies.

China increased its total wind capacity to over 640 gigawatts by adding 120 gigawatts of wind installations last year. India’s addition of 6.3 gigawatts reinforced the importance of wind energy in the world’s fastest-growing economy.

In Europe, Germany added 5.7 gigawatts of wind capacity (including both onshore and offshore) to its system, while Brazil provided 2.3 gigawatts of installations. Meanwhile, during this period, Turkey added 2.1 gigawatts of wind power to its system, raising its total installed wind capacity to approximately 16 gigawatts and strengthening its position as one of the most active onshore wind energy markets in the region. Consequently, global wind energy installed capacity rose to 1,299 gigawatts with the 165 gigawatts added last year.

The report noted that the global wind industry remains committed to maintaining the necessary growth pace in line with the UAE Consensus, established under the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), which aims to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030.
