Hotel Occupancy Rates See Sharp Decline in February

Hotel occupancy rates in Türkiye declined significantly in February, marking one of the weakest performances in recent years, according to data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Figures compiled from official accommodation statistics show that occupancy rates in licensed and basic accommodation facilities fell by around 4.2 percentage points to approximately 26% in February, down from January levels.

Monthly Performance Weakens

The number of visitors staying in accommodation facilities dropped to 4.98 million in February, compared to 5.95 million in January. Similarly, total overnight stays decreased to 10.07 million, down from 12.39 million the previous month.

The average length of stay also edged lower, declining from 2.08 nights in January to 2.02 nights in February.

Regional Breakdown

Occupancy rates showed varying trends across major tourist destinations:

  • In Antalya, occupancy fell by 5.5 percentage points to 23.6%.
  • In Istanbul, rates dropped by 5.4 points to 40%.
  • In Muğla, occupancy increased slightly by 0.89 points to 14.72%.
  • In Izmir, rates declined by 2.5 points, while Aydın saw a modest rise of 0.3 points to 18%.

Broader Trend

The February data highlights a continued slowdown in hotel occupancy following a weaker January performance, suggesting ongoing challenges in the tourism sector despite seasonal expectations.
