Important Istanbul report from Minister Kurum: Urban transformation will be completed in 2024

Murat Kurum, Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, gave a clear answer to the opposition’s perception operation regarding Kanal Istanbul, and also made striking evaluations for Istanbul. Minister Kurum said, “We have seized the unfinished urban transformation in Fikirtepe with the instruction of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. We are carrying out a project that we will hopefully complete by 2024.”

Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum made remarkable statements about the ongoing urban transformation process in Istanbul, the Kanal Istanbul Project, the unfinished urban transformation in Fikirtepe and the mucilage seen in the Marmara Sea.

The Institution, which participated in the meeting of the Parliamentary Mucilage Research Commission, answered the questions of the deputies. The institution shared the following information about Kanal Istanbul and its transformation projects:

39 DISTRICTS OF ISTANBUL

In total, we have studies on urban transformation in almost every area in 39 districts. The urban transformation work, which includes approximately 130 thousand independent sections, which we have determined a reserve area and carried out with the consent of our citizens, voluntarily, quickly, in the place where we started the construction, is actually continuing in Istanbul.

FIKIRTEPE TO BE COMPLETED IN 2024

We seized the unfinished urban transformation in Fikirtepe with the instruction of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. We are carrying out a project that we will hopefully complete by 2024, which includes 15 thousand independent sections.

KANAL ISTANBUL WILL BE DONE

Kanal Istanbul, yes it will be done. The EIA report was prepared with our 200 scientists. The steps in Kanal Istanbul will be taken in line with this EIA report. Neither do we allow steps that will harm water resources or harm ecological life.

IMPORTANCE TOWARDS MUCILAGE

We will, and must, follow all of the terrestrial and marine pollutants. We are the ones who do not want the Marmara Sea to be used as a septic tank, and we will not allow it. In 2002, 13% of the population was given treatment services. Today the rate has reached 88%. Our municipalities, our state did this. After all, the understanding that brought it here will hopefully work in a way that will purify 100% in the next process.

97% IN ERGENE

Currently, the rate of disposal in Ergene is 3%. 97% is not discharged by treatment plants. When the 97% rate is tied, we will see that most of the pollution in the basin is removed.
