The U.S. Department of Labor has released weekly data on unemployment benefit applications.
Accordingly, the number of individuals filing for unemployment benefits for the first time in the week ending June 8 rose by 13,000 from the previous week to 242,000.
Market expectations for unemployment benefit claims, which have reached the highest level since August 2023, were that there would be 225,000 applications.
The data for the previous week showed 229,000 initial unemployment benefit claims.
As of last week, the four-week average of initial unemployment benefit claims rose by 4,750 to 227,000.
The number of ongoing unemployment benefit claims also increased by 30,000 to 1.82 million in the week ending June 1.
