Turkish packaging industry aims to export $10 billion to Europe

ASD President Zeki Saribekir stated that the packaging industry can only meet 10% of Europe’s packaging needs, “We can increase this to 20%, only our exports to Europe will reach $10 billion.”

According to the ASD statement, the packaging industry, which completed last year with $7.5 billion of exports, aims to concentrate on its largest market, Europe.

ASD President Saribekir, whose views were included in the statement, stated that, in addition to the recession and inflation in Europe, the war between Russia and Ukraine changed the course of packaging supply and that Turkiye had a great opportunity in front of it.

“In times of crisis, countries look to new suppliers in the nearby geography to reduce their costs. Europe is far from China, but at the bottom of Turkiye. There is a great opportunity in front of the Turkish packaging industry. Our growth process always takes place in these crises. After all, we are the supplier, but think of it like this; If a company is satisfied in terms of supply, it does not want to change its supplier when you go to sell products to it. Satisfied with the quality, satisfied with the service, satisfied with the price, but in times of crisis, customers in Europe say ‘We need to think about our costs’ and start looking for them again. Costs and prices that were not questioned before are starting to be questioned. Turkiye’s packaging exports are $7.5 billion a year and 60% of this goes to Europe. Despite this, as the packaging industry, we can only meet 10% of Europe’s packaging needs. We can increase this to 20%, in this case, our exports to Europe alone will reach $10 billion.”

Saribekir drew attention to the fact that Turkiye is a very important country in the packaging industry and that it sits somewhere between China and Europe in terms of price, and said that they will concentrate on the US market, which they have determined as the target market after Europe.

Pointing out that the packaging does not pollute the environment, on the contrary, it provides great benefits to the environment with correct recycling and recycling, Saribekir stated that all kinds of packaging can be recycled provided that it is ‘one-layer’.

Stating that it is also important to collect the waste properly, Saribekir said, “Municipalities in Europe go out to tender. There is a bag every day. One day it is blue for plastics, one day it is red for metals, one day it is brown for domestic waste. We can do this in Turkiye as well.’ ‘Zero Waste Project’ is a very good project, but it needs to be embraced more.”
