Istanbul — Turkish conglomerate Koç Holding has entered the global iron and steel sector by becoming a shareholder in Swedish green steel producer Stegra, marking a strategic move into low-carbon industrial production.
The investment was made as part of a capital increase carried out by Stegra to finance the construction of its low-carbon steel production facility in Boden in northern Sweden. The project is considered one of Europe’s most ambitious green industry initiatives.
According to reports, Stegra issued approximately 850 million new shares to support the completion of its plant. With this share issuance, the total number of company shares increased by about 23 percent, and Koç Holding, together with members of the Koç family, joined the group of new investors.
The Turkish group reportedly subscribed to around 2 percent of the newly issued shares, signaling its first direct step into the global iron and steel industry through an international partnership.
Strategic Focus on Green Steel
The investment reflects Koç Holding’s broader strategy to support the transition toward low-carbon industrial production and sustainable manufacturing technologies. By participating in Stegra’s capital increase, the company aims to strengthen the financing of the Swedish plant and contribute to global industrial transformation initiatives focused on reducing emissions.
Stegra’s facility in Boden is designed to produce large-scale green steel, using technologies intended to significantly reduce carbon emissions compared with traditional steelmaking processes. The plant is expected to become one of the world’s first large-scale green steel production sites once completed.
A New Sector for Turkey’s Largest Conglomerate
With more than 100,000 employees across its businesses, Koç Holding is one of Turkey’s largest industrial groups. The partnership with Stegra represents a major step in expanding the group’s presence into the global steel industry while aligning with sustainability trends shaping heavy industry.
The investment also highlights growing international collaboration in the development of green technologies aimed at decarbonizing energy-intensive sectors such as steel production.
