KRG Plans to Build Railway to Connect Kurdistan with Outside World

The minister of transportation and communication of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced plans to build a strategic modern railway connecting the Region with Iraq and Turkiye, noting that the design of the project had now reached a significant stage, according to a report by Kurdistan 24.

He detailed the prospective rail routes, saying the rail network would include routes to FAO Port – Baghdad – Kirkuk – Erbil – Mosul – Duhok – Zakho – Ibrahim Khalil – Turkiye, and beyond.

“I held a joint meeting with my Iraqi counterpart and the Turkish ambassador in Baghdad to discuss details of the project,” Ano Jawhar, Kurdistan Region’s Minister of Transportation And Communication, told Kurdistan 24 this week.

The Kurdistan Region currently doesn’t have a railway. People rely on private transportation means due to limited availability of public bus services and no railroads. Efforts to build a tram and railway system in the Region will significantly boost tourism, and reduce traffic and road accidents.
