U.S.-based chipmaker Nvidia is reportedly evaluating an investment of up to $30 billion in artificial intelligence company OpenAI, according to information confirmed by CNBC.
If completed, the funding round could value OpenAI at as much as $730 billion pre-money, marking one of the largest private company valuations in the technology sector to date.
The reported investment is being conducted separately from a previously announced $100 billion infrastructure agreement revealed in September. That earlier plan, which generated significant attention across the technology industry and spurred new infrastructure deals, envisaged Nvidia investing in OpenAI over several years as new supercomputer facilities come online.
A source previously told CNBC that Nvidia’s initial $10 billion investment under the September framework would be made after the completion of the first gigawatt of computing capacity.
Although the currently discussed $30 billion investment is separate from that earlier structure, Nvidia may still choose to participate in future funding rounds aligned with the infrastructure framework, the source added.
