Turkey: Grain exports increased by 41.43%

In January of this year, Turkey’s overall grain sector exports increased by 41.43% compared to the same period of the previous year.

According to the statement made by the Istanbul Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Exporters’ Association (IHBIR), in January this year, IHBIR’s exports increased by 29.78% compared to the same month of the previous year and reached $240,746 million.

Turkey’s overall grain industry exports amounted to $847,853 million. The sector’s exports to Turkey in general in January increased by 41.43% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Haluk Okutur, Chairman of the Board of IHBIR, gave his assessment on the subject in the statement, and stated that as IHBIR, they exported a total of $13.4 million to India in 2021.

Okutur said, “Our exports to India in January 2021 amounted to $681 thousand. In January 2022, we exported $16,698 million to the country, achieving a tremendous increase of 2 thousand 348%, and we exported more than the total of 2021 to India.”

Stating that they exported to 162 countries in total in January, Okutur said, “In January, our exports to the USA increased by 89.57% compared to the same month of the previous year, our exports to Iraq increased by 22.78%, our exports to India increased by 2 thousand 348%, and our exports to Yemen increased by 44.49% on a value basis.”

Evaluating the figures on product-based increases, Haluk Okutur stated that the record export was in vegetable oils and said:

“In January, exports of sugar and sugary products increased by 30.42% compared to the same month of the previous year to $47,972 million, exports of pastry products increased by 8.41% to $34,973 million, exports of cocoa products increased by 28.17% to $34,815 million, and vegetable oils exports increased by 509.40% to $28,432 million.”

Referring to the product quality of İHBİR members, Okutur said, “The whole world is eagerly waiting for these flavors. Our members find the opportunity to show their product diversity and high added value products in the procurement committee organizations and fairs we organize as the Union. As IHBIR, we represent our country successfully by reaching all parts of the world with the efforts of our successful business people.”

Stating that despite the epidemic, they continued their Procurement Committee programs and moved the delegations that could not be held in the physical environment due to travel restrictions to the digital environment, Okutur gave the following information:

“In the online purchasing committees, our members had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with the officials of the most prestigious importers via the zoom platform and signed important business deals by promoting their products through catalogs. Our members participate in our procurement committee programs by showing a great demand. In 2021, we realized a total of 11 virtual procurement delegations, 3 for the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, 3 for Chile, 2 for Bahrain, and 1 for Argentina, Colombia and Palestine. The number of delegations we have organized since 2020, when the pandemic emerged, has exceeded 25. In 2022, we will continue our online delegation programs without interruption, and as a part of the return to normal, we will continue our face-to-face delegation programs by hosting the world’s important importers in Istanbul, as before the pandemic. As IHBIR, on Thursday, February 10, we will bring our members together with the officials of Colombia’s most prestigious companies in the organization that will be held in the digital environment. During the bilateral meetings, starch, sugary products, biscuits, sweets, pastry products, flour and pastry materials and many more product groups will be introduced.”
