OpenAI has suspended its artificial intelligence video generation application Sora, following what has been described as a growing “capacity crisis” in the AI sector. The move comes as the company faces increasing pressure on computing resources required to run advanced video-generation models.
Sora, a text-to-video platform that allowed users to create highly realistic videos from simple prompts, had quickly gained popularity after its launch. However, the system’s extremely high computational demands and operating costs made it difficult to sustain at scale, with reports indicating that running it consumed massive resources on a daily basis.
In addition to capacity constraints, the platform also drew criticism over risks such as deepfakes, copyright issues, and harmful content, further complicating its future.
As a result, OpenAI decided to pause and eventually discontinue the consumer-facing version of Sora, shifting its focus toward core AI products, enterprise solutions, and more strategic areas like robotics and advanced computing systems.
The decision highlights a broader challenge across the AI industry: while capabilities are advancing rapidly, infrastructure limitations and costs are becoming a major bottleneck, forcing companies to prioritize which technologies to scale.
