Mugla’s Rise as a Global Tourism Hub
According to the Governor of Mugla, İdris Akbıyık, the region welcomed more than 3 million foreign tourists last year, and 2024 promises to surpass those numbers. In addition to foreign visitors, Mugla remains a favorite destination for Turkish tourists, drawing between 7 to 10 million local visitors each year.

A significant portion of Mugla’s foreign visitors come from the United Kingdom. “Every year, British tourists make up the majority of our foreign visitors,” says Governor Akbıyık. In fact, over 1.1 million British travelers have visited Muğla so far in 2024.
This trend is attributed to the city’s luxurious resorts, rich history, and iconic beaches, which continue to charm tourists year after year. Among these, Dalyan has become increasingly popular, thanks to its beautiful İztuzu beach, reeds, and historical sites.
Sports Tourism and Year-Round Activities
Mugla is not just a summer destination. Governor Akbıyık emphasizes that cultural, artistic, and sports activities take place year-round in the city. The region has hosted numerous national and international sports events, further enhancing its global appeal.
New Trends in Tourism:
- Boutique Hotels on the Rise: Ali Mürşit Mugla, the president of the Dalyan Hoteliers and Tourism Association, has observed an increase in the popularity of boutique hotels among both foreign and local tourists.
- Increased Interest from Expats: Expats have also shown a particular fondness for Mugla’s quieter, more exclusive stays.
