Population Policies Council Holds First Meeting: Support for Young Couples, New Regulations on Parental Leave

The Population Policies Council held its first meeting to address declining fertility rates and implement measures to support family building in Turkey. Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz announced initiatives including financial support for young couples, expanded parental leave, and affordable housing programs for first-time homebuyers.

The Council convened to discuss strategies to reverse declining fertility rates linked to economic and workplace challenges. Before the meeting, Vice President Yılmaz outlined the proposed measures:

Financial Assistance for Young Couples

To encourage family formation, the government will offer financial support to young couples, provide marriage counseling, and prioritize first-time homebuyers through social housing programs.

New Work-Life Balance Models

Recognizing the challenges women face in balancing home and work life, the Council aims to develop new work models that prevent women from having to choose between the two. Measures include extended parental leave, daycare support, birth assistance, and options for flexible and remote work.

Expanded Childcare Services

The government plans to introduce more free or low-cost daycare and childcare services to support working parents, ensuring better access to affordable options.

Protecting Family Values

In response to global influences perceived as threats to family structures and traditional values, the Council will strengthen education, culture, and communication policies that emphasize national and cultural values.

These measures, Vice President Yılmaz stated, reflect a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to addressing Turkey’s population challenges while supporting families and promoting societal well-being.
