El Mansur Holding, owned by Sheikh Mansur bin Jaber bin Jassim Al Thani of Qatar’s royal family, has announced plans to invest a total of $31 billion in Botswana and Zambia across multiple sectors.
$12 Billion for Botswana
Botswana’s President Duma Boko revealed the agreement in a Facebook post, stating that the deal was signed with the state-owned Botswana Development Corporation. The investment will target infrastructure, energy, mining, diamond refining, agriculture, tourism, cybersecurity, and defense.
“This move will be sufficient to address the urgent challenges the country is facing,” President Boko said.
$19 Billion for Zambia
In Zambia, El Mansur Holding pledged $19 billion, in what President Hakainde Hichilema described as one of the country’s largest bilateral investment agreements.
According to state broadcaster ZNBC Today, the deal includes the construction of 1.5 million housing units, the establishment of a national investment and development bank, as well as investments in agro-processing, irrigation, and export-oriented value chains.
Africa’s Growing Appeal
Africa remains a prime investment destination, with a $2.8 trillion economy, a population of 1.4 billion, 65% of the world’s arable land, and one-third of global mineral wealth. The African Development Bank estimates the continent needs $402 billion annually to achieve its development goals.
