Ready-made clothing sector made $1.8B of export in September

Ready-made clothing is the second most contributing sector to Turkish exports after automotive sector and made a $1.8 billion of export in September. According to the data of Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) and Uludag Exporters’ Union, ready-made clothing sector exported to more than 170 countries and zones in September.

Ready-made clothing sector realized exports worth $1 billion 797 million 605 thousand with an increase of 19.88 percent in September compared to September 2019; the export value was $12 billion 123 million 141 thousand in the January-September period, with a decrease of 8.69 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

Ready-made clothing sector has the second biggest share in Turkish exports after the automotive sector which made $2 billion 605 million of exports in September.

Ready-made clothing exports has been increasing since July

Ready-made clothing sector started the year well; the sector exported $1 billion 495 million in January with an increase of 5.7 percent compared to Jan 2019 and maintained this increase with $1 billion 523 million of exports in February and an increase of 7.7 percent compared to Feb 2019.

There has been a decrease in ready-made clothing exports due to Covid-19 pandemic that emerged in December and has affected the world since March. The sector made exports of $1 billion 214 million with a 27 percent decrease in March, $575 million 845 thousand with a decrease of 61 percent in April and $840 million 203 thousand with a decrease of 48 percent in May compared to the same months of the previous year.

The sector finally started to recover after three months of decline; ready-made clothing sector made $1 billion 357 million 642 thousand of exports with an increase of 25 percent in June, $1 billion 812 million 844 thousand of exports with an increase of 8.4 percent in July and $1 billion 545 million 731 thousand of exports with an increase of 10.8 percent in August compared to the same months last year.

Ready-made clothing exports to EU countries increasingly continue

There was an increase in the ready-made clothing exports to Germany, to which is the country that Turkey exports the most.

$281 million 119 thousand of ready-made clothing were exported to Germany in September with an increase of 13.46 percent compared to September 2019. January-September exports to Germany amounted to $2 billion 237 million 480 thousand with a decrease of 2.6 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

After Germany, Spain was the second most exported country in this sector. September exports to Spain amounted to $265 million 193 thousand with an increase of 21.6 percent compared to September 2019. Spain was followed by United Kingdom with an increase of 44.5 percent and exports of $232 million 84 thousand, Netherlands with exports of $136 million 219 thousand and an increase of 42 percent, USA with exports of $ 78 million 503 thousand and an increase of 25.3 percent compared to September 2019.

The sector made $1 billion 285 million 549 thousand exports to EU countries in September, with an increase of 25 percent compared to the same month of the previous year.
