Turkiye: New calculation system for export statistics

Within the scope of the new system, the Ministry of Commerce will start publishing “Provincial Export Statistics by Companies’ Production Locations”, which it created to measure export statistics originating from the production structure in the provinces, as of January 2024.

According to the statement made by the Ministry, in the “Foreign Trade Statistics by Provinces” announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the province information of the headquarters of the company carrying out foreign trade is taken as basis. This situation may cause export statistics of companies with different central provinces and production provinces to cluster in the direction of the central province. In addition, exports made through a foreign trade company are recorded in the province where the foreign trade company is located, instead of the province where production is made.

“Provincial Export Statistics by Companies’ Production Locations” was created as a result of a joint study carried out with the participation of the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Industry and Technology and TURKSTAT, which has been going on for about a year, in order to measure the export statistics originating from the production structure in the province.

In order to determine the provinces where production took place, the exporter/manufacturer information of the Ministry of Commerce, the industrial registry certificate data of the Ministry of Industry and Technology were matched with the records of the Social Security Institution and the Revenue Administration.

The new system will allow detailed analysis

Provincial export statistics based on companies’ production locations are tentatively planned to be published in the “Monthly Foreign Trade Data Bulletin” of the Ministry of Commerce, starting from January 2024.

In addition, it is anticipated that the “Foreign Trade Statistics”, which will be published by TURKSTAT on February 29, 2024 within the scope of the Official Statistics Program, will be shared with the public with the January 2024 News Bulletin.

In export statistics according to production areas, it is observed that the exports of industrialized provinces with high production volume come to the fore. The statistics obtained in this context include important indicators such as the technological level of exports by province, allowing detailed analysis by province, product, country and similar sub-breakdowns. Thus, this study is expected to make significant contributions to the data-based determination of provincial/regional policies.
