The United Kingdom’s second-largest supermarket chain, Sainsbury’s, has announced plans to close its remaining cafes, as well as its bakery and pizza counters, resulting in the loss of 3,000 jobs.
The supermarket stated that this decision is aimed at “simplifying operations,” noting that “many of Sainsbury’s most loyal customers do not regularly use the cafes.”
The job cuts will also impact senior management roles, with Sainsbury’s estimating a “reduction of approximately 20% in senior management positions over the next few months.”
Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts explained the reasoning behind the move, stating, “The chain is facing a particularly challenging cost environment, which has necessitated making difficult choices.”
This development comes as the retail sector continues to grapple with rising costs and evolving consumer habits. Sainsbury’s aims to streamline its operations to better navigate these challenges while prioritizing its core offerings.
