Şişecam has announced its sponsorship of the archaeological excavations to be carried out at the ancient city of Perge. Celebrating its 90th anniversary, Şişecam is taking part in a significant project aimed at examining and preserving ancient glass furnaces and glass remnants uncovered at the site. These findings are believed to date back to the Roman period, specifically the 3rd and 4th centuries AD.
The excavation efforts are led by Professor Dr. Şebnem Sedef Çokay Kepçe, Head of the Department of Classical Archaeology at Istanbul University’s Faculty of Letters. Kepçe believes that the five uncovered glass furnaces and the surrounding glass debris will provide valuable insights into the history of glassmaking in Anatolia.
She noted that the analysis of the remnants will be conducted in the laboratories of the Şişecam Science, Technology and Design Center. “In this project, Şişecam not only provides financial support for the restoration of the furnaces but also opens the doors of its R&D center to conduct the high-tech analyses needed for the glass artifacts we uncover during the excavation,” she added.
Şişecam continues its mission of preserving cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations. The company also holds a “Glass Artifacts Collection” that spans approximately 3,500 years. Registered with the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, this collection includes 520 historical glass objects from the Ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods.
