Solar Power Accounts for Three-Quarters of Global Electricity Demand Growth, Says Global Solar Council

Solar energy has emerged as the dominant force in global electricity generation growth, accounting for approximately three-quarters of the increase in electricity demand worldwide, according to data from the Global Solar Council.

The latest figures highlight a historic shift in the global energy landscape, with solar power leading the expansion of clean electricity and significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Solar Leads Global Energy Transition

Solar power generation recorded a sharp rise of around 30% over the past year, marking the fastest growth in the last eight years. This surge has elevated solar’s share in global electricity production to nearly 8.7%.

Experts say the rapid expansion is largely driven by declining costs and technological advancements. Since 2010, the cost of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems has fallen by about 90%, making solar the cheapest source of new electricity in many countries.

Renewables Overtake Coal

In a significant milestone, renewable energy sources have surpassed coal in global electricity generation for the first time in over a century. Renewables now account for roughly 33.8% of total electricity production, slightly ahead of coal.

Solar energy has been identified as the primary driver behind this transformation, playing a central role in accelerating the global shift toward cleaner energy systems.

Wind and Solar Meet Nearly All Demand Growth

Together, wind and solar energy met about 99% of the growth in global electricity demand, effectively halting the rise of fossil fuel-based power generation.

Solar alone contributed around 75% of this increase, underlining its critical role in meeting rising energy needs while limiting carbon emissions.

Rapid Expansion Supported by Storage Technologies

The growth of solar energy has been further supported by advancements in battery storage systems, which are increasingly being integrated with solar installations. This combination is improving energy reliability and accelerating adoption across both developed and emerging markets.
